Renew International Driving License

How to Renew an International Driving License

Technically, you cannot “renew” an IDP; you must apply for a new one once your current permit expires.

When does it expire?
Most IDPs are valid for one year from the date of issue (or until your domestic license expires, whichever comes first).

The Renewal Process

1
Do not wait until it expires
If you are currently traveling, apply for a new IDP via mail through your home country’s authorized agency well before your current one runs out.
2
Submit a new application
You will need to submit a fresh application form, new photos, and the application fee again.
3
Shipping
If you are already abroad, you will need to arrange for international shipping to receive the physical document.
Q: Does the International Driving Permit replace my driver’s license?

A: No. The IDP is only valid when presented alongside your original, valid driver’s license. You must carry both documents with you when driving abroad.

Q: Can I just use my regular license in other countries?

A: Some countries may accept your domestic license (especially neighboring countries), but many require an IDP to rent a car or for insurance purposes. If you get pulled over without one in a country that requires it, you could face heavy fines.

A: If you go in person to an authorized agency, it takes about 15–20 minutes. If you apply by mail, it can take 2–4 weeks depending on processing times.

A: No written or driving test is required to get the permit itself. However, having the permit doesn't mean you are ready for foreign roads—that is where Phoenix Pro Driving School lessons come in!

A: No. An IDP issued in your home country is not valid for driving within your home country. It is strictly for international use.

How to Get IDP

How to Get Your International Driving License (IDP)

Obtaining an IDP is a straightforward process, but it requires that you already hold a valid driver’s license in your home country.

Step 1

Check Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid, permanent driver’s license issued by your country of residence. Learner’s permits are generally not accepted.
Step 2

Gather Documents

You will typically need:
  • A completed IDP application form.
  • Two original passport-sized photos.
  • A photocopy of your current valid driver’s license (front and back).
  • The application fee.
Step 3

Apply at an Authorized Agency

Visit the authorized automobile association in your country (e.g., AAA in the USA, CAA in Canada, or the Post Office/AA in the UK). You can usually apply in person for immediate issuance or by mail.
Step 4

Receive Your Permit

If applying in person, you will receive your IDP booklet immediately. It translates your license details into 10+ languages.
